Build the safeguards

Choose a pattern by the failure it addresses. Several safeguards can be necessary at once.
| Approach | Useful when | Decision or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate local state | A disposable local interaction | Misrepresents a save if the server can reject it |
| Optimism plus reconciliation | A reversible change with a clear confirmed record | Requires rollback, conflicts and cache updates |
| Wait for confirmation | An irreversible or consequential operation | More visible latency; use a clear pending state |
| Index keys | A truly static positional list | Input identity can move when records reorder |
| Stable record keys | Editable or reordered record lists | IDs must remain stable across refreshes |
| Memoization | A measured, expensive subtree with stable props | Adds complexity without guaranteed benefit |
| Environment | What you can do | Scope |

| This browser lab | Click, compare, reset and inspect exact source | This is a real React application with a timed, in-memory server fixture. It demonstrates UI state and version checks; it does not connect to a reservation service or implement a production Next.js server. |
| Independent download | Run the same prebuilt lab with Python’s local server | No package installation or automatic external calls needed for the prebuilt preview |
| Native exercise | Run language tests and the included local adapter or script | Requires the documented local toolchain; does not provision a cloud service |
A rejected save returns the safeguarded editor to two seats. A competing edit preserves the server’s newer four-seat record. A successful save updates the safeguarded summary to three seats.
Begin with an observable outcome, inspect the decisions that produced it, then test a repair. The companion tutorial explains the mechanism; the how-to guide takes the same source into an independent environment.
