Dot Designers history / 2010–2011 era
Dot Designers designed and developed an Oracle-backed website and content-administration system for Emory University's Neuroscience Graduate Program.
The context
The Neuroscience Graduate Program brought together faculty, students, alumni, research interests, and projects that crossed normal organizational boundaries.
The recovered application shows a public information architecture spanning research, faculty, students, alumni, curriculum, events, applications, and program resources. Keeping that content coherent required more than a collection of disconnected pages.
The challenge
People could hold different roles, connect to multiple research areas, and carry detailed academic and professional information.
Research areas also needed their own structure. Projects needed descriptions and images. The public site had to turn those related records into useful listings, profiles, navigation, and featured content while giving program administrators focused editing tools.
The system
Faculty, students, alumni, and inactive profiles were represented as distinct structured types.
Profiles supported education, advisors, graduation, position, research interest, links, images, and descriptive content.
People could be associated with research areas through a dedicated relational model.
Research projects carried names, descriptions, image references, and public presentation paths.
Dedicated interfaces supported adding, editing, listing, and deleting core content records.
The PHP application used bound Oracle operations, sequences, relationships, and direct content queries.
The outcome
The recovered source is a working application record: an administrative layer, an Oracle content model, and public rendering built around the program's real people and research relationships.
Why it matters
Universities are not the only organizations managing complex networks of people, expertise, topics, and work.
Associations, research organizations, professional networks, and expert directories face the same design problem: model the relationships once, give staff usable controls, and present the information consistently wherever audiences need it.
